Basically, it's an app you can get for $2.99 (well worth the investment) that trains you over the course of 13 weeks how to run a 10k. Now I am in no way a runner, but this app has helped me pace myself and has actually helped given me a goal to work towards - the end goal being completing a 10k race for the Rock n' Sole run that spans across the lakefront through Milwaukee.
This training has made me feel great. I started off not being able to run for more than a minute without getting tired, and my workouts prior to this were usually just a brisk 20 min. walk on the treadmill. Now I can do a combination of running and walking for over an hour and actually had tons of energy afterwards. Right now I'm up to 40 mins of running, with 30 mins of walking in between. Since I am halfway done with my training, and still going - I decided to invest in some workout gear including new running shoes, shirts, and pants that are made for workouts so they're not baggy or slow me down. I also purchased an armband, and running with my iPod has been much easier since.
Essentials for a successful workout for me are: my iPod - it keeps track of my distance with my Nike + chip/app combo, it tells me when to walk and when to run with my c210k app, and it provides a great way to get lost in my music so I don't even think about the toughness of my workout. A killer playlist is also key to a successful workout - right now mine consists of a little Yeasayer, Elvis Costello, Arcade Fire, Sleigh Bells, and even some Lady Gaga. Pick some up beat music that will make you want to keep going. I also never run without Alysa's armband imprinted with the words "I carry my heart with you." This keeps me motivated x10 to keep going, and helps me keep pushing even when I think it's getting to hard.
Overall, this has been a great motivator for me to get in shape, to push my limits to reach my ultimate goal of running a 10k, and something that has made me feel great both physically and mentally. Running for me clears my head and loosens my mind and muscles - making me feel better about myself and life in general. I encourage you to get on some sort of workout routine, if you're not a 10k runner, try the couch to 5k app, or if running isn't an option, challenge yourself to walk 5 days a week. Find a way to incorporate it into your everyday life just as you would lunch or work or sleeping, and make yourself get up and go - even if it's just a quick 10 minute walk on your lunch or get up an extra 15 mins every morning and walk. Don't say you're too busy either, because trust me it's always pretty crazy here too! It will pay off in the long run, I promise! Keep me updated on your progress and I'll let you know how the 10k goes!!
