I've been left handed all my life. The stigma around being left handed has pretty much gone away in the past decade, but every now and again I'll get the "Your left handed?!?" question asked in shock which makes me laugh and recall the story my dad used to tell me about my Grandma being left handed. My Grandma went to a Catholic School when she was growing up and back then they saw using your left hand as being evil and would force you to use your right hand, even though it was more comfortable to use the left. The school teachers would actually slap my Grandma's hand with a ruler if she used her left, and for some reason that story never got old to me. I'm actually convinced that being left handed is hereditary, as myself, my aunt, and my Grandma are all lefties. But there's really no way to know that since before my Grandma's time being a lefty was essentially taboo.
Recently I stumbled upon this site:
http://www.lefthandside.com/ a site dedicated to left handed artists (it is thought that lefties tend to be more artistic than most because of the way it connects to the right side of the brain - the visual & emotional half.) There's also a lot of interesting facts that you probably did not know about lefties from discovering a left handed gene to the idea that lefties are more likely to develop schizophrenia.
"Lefties see the forest rather than the trees. Their right brain orientation means they tend to see the whole picture rather than one piece at a time." (from the left-hander's handbook)
(This was one of my favorite bits from this site because I've been told several times throughout my life that I think this way.)
Just some left handed thoughts......
